Profile: Patchouli Essential Oil

Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin) is native to India and Malaysia. Patchouli leaves were placed between Indian cashmere shawls en route to Victorian England, to protect the merchandise from moths, and without this signature smell of dried patchouli leaves the shawls could not be sold in England as this was proof of their origin.


The essential oil of patchouli is very fragrant. If distilled in stainless steel stills it is a clear liquid or a bronze color if distilled in iron containers. It is one of the essential oils whose fragrance becomes stronger over time. It is viscous and can become thicker the longer you have it but does not lose its effectiveness.


Patchouli essential oil is effective for dry skin, psoriasis, wounds, and scars. It is a strong antifungal remedy for ringworm, athlete’s foot, and nail fungus. It is a moderate sedative useful for stress, anxiety, depression and insomnia. There is some information using patchouli essential oil for Parkinson’s Disease (PD) to reduce brain inflammation and assist with dopamine production as well as aid in sleep for those with PD. It is also used as an insect repellant and an aphrodisiac, often at the same time.


No known contraindications. No safety concerns with topical application or inhalation methods.
