Essential Oils for Pain

Updated: Jan 9

There are several essential oils that can be used effectively for pain. Many chemical constituents found in these oils have been identified as having analgesic, antinociceptive (blocking or reducing pain signals to the brain) pain-relieving properties. Though these work holistically in an essential oil with the other constituents, using oils high in these constituents can bring much needed relief from pain.

Myrcene (technically known as beta-myrcene) is a strong analgesic and antinociceptive agent. It is a monoterpene and is found in juniper (Juniperus communis) needle essential oil, pink peppercorn (Schinus molle), and hops (Humulus lupulus) essential oil which contains over 50% myrcene.

Eugenol is a powerful analgesic found in large percentages in clove (Syzygium aromaticum) essential oil. Dentists have been using clove oil for many decades to reduce tooth pain as well as having an antibiotic effect.

Petitgrain (Citrus aurantium) essential oil is extracted from the leaves of the bitter orange tree. It is rich in a chemical constituent family known as esters which have analgesic effects. Mandarin petitgrain (Citrus reticulata) contains an ester: N-methyl anthranilate which not only is pain-relieving but is also a sedative and can help with anxiety. Helichrysum (Helichrysum angustifolia, syn. H. italicum) is also rich in esters and is indicated for painful conditions such as fibromyalgia.

There are several other essential oil constituents that can relieve pain. Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens) essential oil is rich in an aspirin-like constituent. Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) has a high ester content. Peppermint (Mentha × piperita) contains menthol which has analgesic properties. And there are many others. Blending some of these together can make a powerful pain-reliver. This can be done in a carrier oil for a topical application, in a diffuser, or in a nasal inhaler.

Recently, I made a nasal inhaler using juniper needle, pink peppercorn, hops, mandarin petitgrain, clove, and helichrysum essential oils. This has been very effective for those who used it.
