Marjoram (Origanum majorana) is a culinary plant that also has medicinal properties. Originally from the Mediterranean region, the word Origanum is from the Greek word
orosganos meaning “joy of the mountain.” It was a very popular herb amongst the Greeks
and widely used in medicine and perfumes. Its medicinal use goes as far back as ancient Egyptian times. In the 16th century, it was strewn on the floor to mask unpleasant smells. If you have ever smelled fresh marjoram, you will know why. It has a pleasant, pungent, sweet aroma.
Marjoram is a tender, bushy plant that can grow 1 to 1 and a half feet tall. It is native to the Mediterranean region but is cultivated in many areas of the world. It is commercially produced primarily in Spain, Egypt, North Africa, and Hungary. It belongs to the mint family and is a cousin of oregano. Marjoram will produce small white or pink blossoms.
Marjoram essential oil is warming and relaxing. It calms tension and anxiety and is used to relax muscles. It has an analgesic effect that helps headache, migraines, and muscle sprains. It is antimicrobial and antiviral in its actions. Marjoram essential oil can stimulate appetite and is used for gastrointestinal problems. It is often used for nervous tension and as a relaxant. Some have used it as an aphrodisiac.
The oil, (unlike the fresh herb which has a sweet, pungent aroma) has a strong eucalyptus, turpentine-like aroma. The leaves and flowering tops are steam distilled to produce the essential oil. It is a thin, clear liquid.
Marjoram essential oil has no safety concerns and no contraindications. It is moderately priced by most suppliers.
