The cajeput tree (Melaleuca cajuputi) is indigenous to the Eastern coast of Australia, New Caledonia, New Guinea, and few other temperate regions of the world. It is a cousin of tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) and shares its antimicrobial and decongesting properties. Both are from the Myrtaceae plant family along with the eucalyptus and myrtle species. Its name comes from the Indonesian and Malay name, kayu (wood) putih (white).
Cajeput essential oil is distilled from its leaves and twigs. It has a fresh, eucalyptus-like scent and is a clear, thin liquid. It is moderately priced and offered at some online essential oil retailers. A search for cajeput sellers may be needed.
In a research study, cajeput essential oil was shown to block the Covid virus from binding with human host cells. The researchers concluded that cajeput essential oil is a valuable resource to prevent Covid virus infection (My TTA, et al, Chemistry Select. 2020;5(21):6312-6320). Cajeput essential oil has antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal properties.
Cajeput oil is used for respiratory congestion, reducing fever, and to clear and stimulate the mind. Additionally, cajeput essential oil is indicated for muscle/joint issues and pain. This is a wonderful oil to add to a diffuser blend during flu season.
