Essential oils affect the limbic brain within a few seconds. They can influence mood, alertness, hormones and neurotransmitters. This makes aromatherapy a powerful tool in meditation. The following recipe creates a wonderful spray to use just prior to meditation. It can also be used for grounding if you're feeling a bit scattered or if you just want a room air freshener that brings a peaceful aroma. Additionally, you could use just the essential oils in an ultrasonic diffuser without an emulsifier or carrier oil.
4 drops cedarwood (Juniperus virginiana or J. mexicana) essential oil
6 drops frankincense (Boswellia carterii) essential oil
4 drops bergamot (Citrus bergamia) essential oil
15 drops liquid castile soap (lavender castile soap would be great) or dishwashing liquid. If you rather not use soap at all, use Polysorbate 20, an all-natural emulsifier.
2 oz. filtered water
Combine essential oils with soap (emulsifier) completely. Mix the soap/essential oil mixture with water. Stir until fully combined. Pour into a spray bottle. Any spray bottle will work or if you want a finer mist that tends to stay in the air longer, get a 2 oz fine mister bottle. Use just before meditating or when you want to freshen the air.
Please note: the scientific names are given above so you can get the right species. This is important for this blend to work effectively.
