Numerous essential and carrier oils are effective in maintaining the health of your hair and scalp by providing moisture and eliminating buildup. To enhance moisture, invigorate, and promote hair growth, individuals frequently use essential oils such as Atlas cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica), rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus), patchouli (Pogostemon cablin), and lavender (Lavandula angustifolia).
The carrier oils shown to be beneficial to the hair and scalp include jojoba, avocado, argan, and coconut oils. These will help to reduce split ends and give the hair luster and moisture. They moisturize the scalp and reduce dandruff and only a little is needed for good results.
Using an ounce of a carrier oil, place 15-18 drops of essential oil or combination of essential oils into the carrier and mix well. This makes about a 2% dilution. For children, the elderly or people with sensitive skin, a 1% dilution rate is recommended. Rub a teaspoon of the oil blend into hair and scalp. This is a daily hair/scalp application which will moisturize, invigorate and balance with consistent use.
Alternately, you can put 1-2 drops of an essential oil into shampoo in the palm of your hand just before shampooing. Do not add essential oils to the shampoo bottle because over time, it can change the pH and degrade the shampoo.
