Why Use the Scientific Name of Plants?

Updated: May 26

The common names of many plants are well-known. One name may refer to several different plants as well as one plant may have several different common names. With all the variations in these names, using the scientific name is the one way to make sure we are talking about the same plant. To be sure we are using the essential oil of the right plant for a certain condition, we need to know that specific plant.

In aromatherapy, four distinct types of cedarwood oils serve various purposes. Among them are Virginia cedarwood (Juniperus virginiana), known for its exceptional relaxing, anti-anxiety, and antidepressant properties. This oil belongs to the Cupressaceae family of cypress trees, rather than the Pinaceae family of true cedars. Himalayan cedarwood (Cedrus deodara), a true cedar, is particularly effective for addressing skin issues. Therefore, when seeking cedarwood essential oil for anxiety or dry skin, it is important to choose the appropriate oil for the specific condition.

Here, on my website, I use these scientific, binomial names to identify the essential oil plants. This is the best way to get the right oil to be effective for a condition.
