Flu season is upon us again. I have written about this in an earlier blog post, “Staying Well in Flu Season.” It is becoming more important to protect ourselves and our loved ones from infections whether they be viral, bacterial or fungal.
In a recent research study, it was found that having a history of serious infections such as influenza, respiratory illnesses, fungal diseases and other viral infections lead to greater possibility of developing dementia and other cognitive problems later in life. According to this study:
“A history of severe infections has been associated with increased risk for dementia and neurodegenerative diseases. Systemic infections may influence dementia risk and neurodegeneration by triggering an acute inflammatory response or reshaping the host immune system, as in the case of chronic inflammation.” https://doi.org/10.1038/s43587-024-00682-4. This study covers the effects of repeated infections on the brain. I recommend reading it.
In my household, we have several essential oil diffusers, and we have them going as needed, especially as the weather turns colder. This helps with minimizing the risk of infection from air-borne pathogens but also has a decongestant effect as well. There is a great deal of research and study showing that essential oils have powerful effects against infection, which is important in this age of viral, bacterial, and fungal resistance to many pharmaceutical medications currently being prescribed. Additionally, essential oils are known for their excellent anti-inflammatory properties which affect all body systems including the brain and central nervous system.
Of course, I diffuse essential oils for many health benefits such as sleeplessness, digestive issues, peace and calming effects and many others. I strongly recommend having an essential oil diffuser. You can read my blog on diffusers for more information.
