Staying Well in Flu Season, Part 1

Updated: Feb 13

I believe “flu season” is upon us. But maybe we should say, “virus season,” to include the other viruses that are common recently. Aromatherapy can help in prevention and treatment of symptoms of viral infections. Cajeput (Melaleuca cajuputi) essential oil, a cousin of tea tree, was studied in vitro showing it blocked the Covid virus from binding with human host cells. The researchers concluded that cajeput essential oil “is a valuable resource for preventing SARS-CoV-2 invasion into the human body,” (My TTA, et.al. Chemistry Select. 2020;5(21):6312-6320).

There are several oils that have been studied for their antiviral and antimicrobial properties. These include not only cajeput, but also tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia), oregano (Origanum vulgare), clove (Syzygium aromaticum), eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus or E. radiata), cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum), niaouli (Melaleuca quinquenervia), lemon (Citrus limon), peppermint (Mentha x piperita) and melissa essential oils. Melissa essential oil is from the lemon balm plant (Melissa officianalis) and was shown to be effective against cold sores and shingles, both of which are caused by viruses. These can be used in a topical blend or in a nasal inhaler. There is no guarantee this will prevent Covid, flu infections since infections have many sources and components, but there is much evidence to support using them during flu season.

Please take precautions this season as well as get your vaccinations. I am available to help you with using essential oils to minimize viral infection risk.
