June is recognized as PTSD Awareness Month. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a condition that can develop in individuals who have experienced a shocking, frightening, or dangerous event, or have endured prolonged trauma in their lives. It can manifest in various ways unique to each person. However, there are common symptoms that may be shared. These include “flashbacks” of the traumatic events, intrusive thoughts, anxiety issues, avoidance of places or thoughts related to the trauma, heightened startle response, sleep disturbances, irritability, aggression, depression, and/or social withdrawal.
PTSD can affect anyone at any age, including combat veterans and individuals who have experienced or witnessed physical or sexual assault, abuse, accidents, disasters, or other serious events. Those with PTSD may feel stressed or frightened even when not in immediate danger. Children who have experienced abuse may grow up to be fearful, anxious, and/or depressed, despite the abuse having ended years earlier.
Treatment for PTSD often involves counseling and medication to manage symptoms. There are numerous resources available for assistance, and initiating a conversation with a healthcare provider can be a good starting point.
Aromatherapy may alleviate certain PTSD symptoms. Essential oils for anxiety, depression, and sleep can be beneficial. A blend of calming, relaxing oils has helped many individuals with PTSD. Additionally, when ready, there are oils that can aid in the therapeutic process of processing memories and emotions due to their effects on the limbic system of the brain.
If you have PTSD or suspect you may be experiencing its symptoms, it is crucial to seek help. While reaching out may be challenging, it can be rewarding and lead to greater peace of mind.
