How Can Aromatherapy Help Dermatitis and Eczema?

Aromatherapy and essential oils are powerful aids in skin health. This is often where their healing properties shine. Essential oils, carrier oils, and body butters have been used for centuries in skin care with amazing results.

The terms "dermatitis" and "eczema," are often used interchangeably. Dermatitis refers to inflammation of the skin and technically, eczema is reserved for atopic dermatitis. Both conditions can manifest as dry skin, redness, itching, flaky skin, crusting, sometimes oozing of the area.

There are several types of dermatitis. Adult seborrheic dermatitis affects the scalp and can show up as dandruff, itching, flaky, and skin. It can be caused by hormone imbalance, weakened immune system, environmental factors, or fungal infections. It can be aggravated by stress. Infantile seborrheic dermatitis, also known as "cradle cap," usually occurs in infants that are less than 1 year old. It usually begins to clear after age 1.

Eczema is usually a more severe condition with excessive dryness, redness, flaking and can be chronic. Most often it affects infants and children but can show up at any age and there seems to be a genetic factor with eczema. Many children who have eczema may "grow out of it" as they get older.

Aromatherapy can help with dermatitis and eczema. Many essential oils have anti-inflammatory, skin rejuvenating, moisturizing, and protective properties. Added to carrier oils and butters can make a powerful remedy for most dermatitis conditions, including eczema. Many carrier oils have just as many skin healing properties as essential oils. As with most health concerns, a holistic, comprehensive approach is the ideal way of addressing dermatitis. Diet, exercise, stress reduction, improved sleep quality, adequate hydration and moisturizing with natural products can make significant improvements in skin problems.
